History
Not much is published about the history of Black Jack other than the fact that it's name stems from a grove of "Black Jack" oak trees that used to at what is now the intersection of Parker and Old Halls Ferry road. Farmers from outlying districts would utilize the trees and the shade that they provided as a resting area when they were taking their wares to markets 12 miles away in St. Louis.
Julius Nolte built a home near the spot sometime prior to 1860. In 1865 the US Postal Service recognized the area naming it Black Jack. Mr. Nolte was away fighting in the civil war, but when he returned he was named the area's first Postmaster. In addition to his duties as Postmaster, he also opened a general store.
Several business grew up around the area and over time more houses were built. In June of 1970 Black Jack was designated a third class city. A grove of the trees germinated by the original, "Black Jacks" still stands in what is today the city's park.
The town also recieved notice when it attempted to evict a couple and their two children from their home based upon the fact that the couple was not married. The town's local ordiance required that any group of three people living together must be related by marriage, blood or adoption. The town denied an occupancy permit to the couple based upon the fact that they were not married.
The couple enlisted the aid of the American Civil Liberties Union to fight the eviction. The ACLU filed a suit on behave of the couple and the town backed down by changing it's definition of what constitutes a family.
