History
In 1768, a fort was built at the mouth of the Missouri River by the Spanish in order to defend the area from hostile Indians. The Fort, named Don Carlos Tercero Del Rey, was named after the then heir to the Spanish Throne. Baden grew as a result of it's location along the road from St. Louis to the fort.
In 1806 this fort was replaced by the American governor of what was then the newly purchased Louisiana Territory. The new fort, Fort Belfontaine was much bigger and sat on higher ground and secured the area until 1827 when the troops were moved south to Jefferson Barracks.
The road from St. Louis to the forts was originally named, The Great Trail but was later named Bellefontaine Road outside of the then (1876) boundaries of the city and North Broadway within the city limits. The City of Baden started at the intersection of what was then the road to Hall's Ferry and is now called....you guessed it, Hall's Ferry!
With the building of the two forts north of St. Louis making farming practical and with both Hall's Ferry and Bellefontaine being the major roads for farmers to bring their products to market, it was a natural location for settlement. It wasn't until the 1840's through 1850's when a major influx of German settlers moved to the area that the population started to become more urban. The name Baden is thought to have originated because the first postmaster of the area, Frederick Kraft, was from Baden Germany. He was the saloon keeper and when a post office was to be opened in the area, he also served in that function.
The area existed as it's own town until 1876 when it was annexed by the city of St. Louis by an act of the State legislature.
Starting in 1830, the city of St. Louis began building it's water supply system. In 1867 construction began on the waterworks plant on what was then called Bissell's Point on the Mississippi River. In 1915 a filter plant, the largest of it's kind in the world at that time, was built at the Chain of Rocks. It was capable of producing 160,000,000 gallons of water per day.
Most of Baden's current housing stock was built between 1920 and as recent as 1948. The older areas near the business district was built somewhat earlier and housing primarily consisted of flats and apartment buildings.
The area fell into decline starting in the early 1960's and continued to lose population through the 1990's. Recently it has begun to experience a resurgence with the population starting to increase, improvements to the streetscapes and a certain amount of redevelopment going on.
