History
The modern history of Benton Park begins not that long after St. Louis was established as a city with the area outside of 18th street being utilized as common fields. From 1842 to 1865 the area near what would become Benton Park located at Jefferson Avenue and Arsenal Street was utilized as the City Cemetery.
During the 1850's the city began to sell portions of the common fields for development. On June 25th, 1866 the city passed an ordinance making the cemetery into a 14 acre park called City Park.
By 1875 the area was considered to be semi-urban with many of the residents being attached to the brewing industry which had been attracted to the area by the extensive cave network that was located below the area. The constant 55 degree temperature that the caves maintained was perfect for the storage of beer.
The brewing industry in St. Louis was heavily dominated by people of German descent and as these people moved to the area they utilized a good number of German born and/or trained architects. These architects and builders util
ized the readily available clay and built homes that were detailed in their masonry. Even smaller homes were built with extensive use of ornamental brickwork and stamped metal finishes.
The neighborhood thrived into the 20th Century until Prohibition came in 1919. With the breweries being shut down, the area experienced a localized recession. Which was followed up in turn by the Great Depression of the 1930's.
Benton Park held it's own after The Depression and through World War II. However after World War II the area went into a period of decline as the population of the city moved further west. This decline hastened in the 1960's and throughout the 1970's.
In the late 1970's and early 1980's the area started to rebound a bit after the Lafayette and
Soulard areas became "rehab" areas and prices started to rise for historic properties. The Federal government also spurred rehab of historic structures with a federal historic rehabilitation tax credit.
Benton Park lagged behind to a certain extent due to the tax credit being modified and to this day there are quite a few properties in the neighborhood which have never been rehabilitated.
Benton Park
As mentioned above, Benton Park was created by ordinance on June 25, 1866 as City Park. Later the name was changed to Benton Park in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, a United States Senator from Missouri and a very interesting historical character.
The park, which had served as the city cemetery, was the benefactor of an urban park movement that was going on across the country during this time. Benton Park and nearby Lafayette Park are two prime examples of this movement.
Parks of this period were characterized by the use
of band stands and extensive horticultural displays. Benton park benefited by improvements by horticulturist, Edward F. Krausnick. Krausnick used rare trees, shrubs and beds of flowers to landscape the park. The park also featured a greenhouse, a foot bridge and two ponds.
The park fell into disrepair over the years until renovation efforts in the early 1980's. In the summer of 1984 the 1889 foot bridge, the playground and the ponds (which were leaking into the cave system underneath the park) were all renovated through the use of federal, state and city money. On December 30th, 1985 the neighborhood and the park were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
