History
Ballwin Missouri was founded by John Ball in 1837. Ball was the son of an Irish Immigrant who had served in the Revolutionary War. In return for his service to the new country, James Ball was awarded a military land grant in Kentucky. Around 1797 or 1798 John Ball moved to West St. Louis county. This was about the same time as Daniel Boone moved from Kentucky to the St. Louis area. It is rumored that the senior Ball was friends with Mr. Boone.
In 1800 John Ball bought about 400 acres of land along Grande Glaize Creek. The Louisiana
Purchase caused his title to be held in question and it took him over ten years to clear the title to the land.
After Jefferson City was made the new State Capital a road was built between St. Louis and Jefferson City. The road went by several different names such as Market Road and Jefferson Road, but later went on to become known as Manchester Road. This new road ran right along the side of Mr. Ball's property. In 1837 Ball incorporated his land as a town then known as Ballshow. A couple of days later he admended the incorporation papers and changed the name to Ballwin. It was believed that the change was partially due to the comp
etition between the town and Manchester and the town that would become Ballwin.
Manchester Road has always been pivotal to the life of Ballwin. Even today it remains one of the major east/west thoroughfares and most of the businesses in Ballwin are located either on Manchester or close by.
In 1950 Ballwin became the first municipality in St. Louis County to have a lighted baseball field.
