History
Four villages combined in 1972 when Arnold, Missouri was first incorporated. Flamm City was located on Telegraph road where the ferry crossed over from St. Louis County. Beck was located along State Highway 67 just north of where Telegraph road intersects with Hwy 67. Ten Brook was just north of Flamm City along the Meramec River. And Maxville was located near old Lemay Ferry road and Hwy 141 intersect.
The area had long been inhabited by The Osage Indians who primarily lived in semi-permanent villages along the Osage River. They primarily roamed the land between the Missouri River to the north, the Mississippi River to the east, the Arkansas River to the south and westward into Kansas and Oklahoma.
The Osage were relied heavily on hunting of bison and deer in addition to some farming. They were known as a war-like tribe and traveled heavily armed during their hunts.
When the first European's came to their territory however, the Osage choose not to resist the influx of white people, but rather began to trade with them providing much of the fur that the early white settlers in turn traded back east. As the number of white settlers grew, the Osage became more and more hostile towards them to the point where many of the early residents of Jefferson County fled to St. Louis for security reasons.
In 1821 Missouri became a state and the Osage were forced to move west into areas of Kansas and Oklahoma that were then referred to as the Indian Territories. The Osage Indians, as a tribe, are currently located on a reservation in Oklahoma.
The first European settler in Arnold was Jean Baptiste Gamache. He operated a ferry across the Meramec River on what was then known as King's Trace or El Camino (the King's road) that ran from St. Louis to Ste. Genevieve. This road was renamed in 1850 after telegraph lines, the first in the state, were strung along it. It's new name aptly enough was Telegraph Road.
The area that would eventually make up Arnold developed at a steady pace after the Indians were removed. The soil and the weather being very suitable for orchards and the available market in St. Louis being close by, many orchards were cultivated. In addition to the orchards, dairy farms soon developed to supply the growing St. Louis market.
The Arnold area maintained it's rural nature into the mid twentieth century and the advent of the
interstate highway system. Arnold started to develop into a bedroom community for St. Louis. As communities further south and north have continued to develop, Arnold has become a bit more urban in nature to where it is today.
