Introduction To The St. Louis Metropolitan Area
This page is a brief over - view of St. Louis demographics. It is intended to be a quick reference to information about the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. I gleaned this most of this information from The St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association's web page. Their web page offers a ton of information that goes far beyond the scope of my page. The St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area is made up of five counties on the Illinois side of the Mississippi river and six counties and one city (St. Louis City is it's own county).
Missouri Side
The majority of the population resides on the Missouri side of the Mississippi river with the population density being the highest is St. Louis city. As you move away from the river on the Missouri side, the population density goes down.
St. Louis county (population 1,016,315) has areas that range from highly urban to a few areas that still retain some vestiges of farm land (mainly on the flood plains that are not readily subject to development).
St. Louis city (Population 348,189) is fully developed and the urban core to the St. Louis MSA.
St. Charles County (Population 283, 883) is located northwest of St. Louis county and has experienced rapid growth for several decades and is the third most populous county in the St. Louis MSA. It too has population densities ranging from urban to rural.
Jefferson County (Population of 198,099) has also been experiencing rapid growth as the area has changed from more of a rural area to a suburban area.
Lincoln (Population 38, 944), Warren (Population 24,525) and Franklin (Population 93,807)counties round out the Missouri side of the MSA and are all far-suburban to rural counties. All three of which have also been experiencing rapid growth, at least in the parts of them that are closest to the core area.
Illinois
Madison County (Population 258,941) is the Illinois county with the most population in the SLMSA. The majority of it's development has been along the Mississippi river, but as the development on the Missouri side of the Mississippi has gotten further and further out, areas such as Edwardsville have started to see rapid growth.
St. Clair County (Population 256,082) has East St. Louis as it's core, but then spreads out to become a rural county with a lot of room for growth. The I 64 corridor from East St. Louis on past O'Fallon Illinois has also been experiencing rapid population growth.
Monroe County (Population 27, 619) is mostly rural, but the Columbia Illinois area is growing rapidly too.
Clinton County (Population 35,535) is mostly rural, but is home to Scott Air Force Base, which boosts it's population figures.
Jersey County (Population 21,668) is rural in nature.
